The Careful Chase, is part of the Preserve Me watercolor and gouache series. It immediately introduces the series' exploration of our society's obsession with youth and the frantic efforts we make to preserve our outer appearance.
The serene profile of the figure, the beautiful "shell," is caught in a moment of deep contemplation, her hand delicately examining her own face. Around her, the Orbettes—personified thoughts—are intensely focused on ways to combat aging. One Orbette brings an injection of youth, another pulls at the corner of her eye, and a third is tagging the neck, all working desperately to maintain the 'shell.' The final Orbette is seen chasing a butterfly, a direct and poignant attempt to capture the fleeting nature of time and beauty as it flies away.
